英式英语用 play football，美式英语常用 play soccer。但在国际语境中，football 通常指足球。如果特指“踢足球”这个动作，也可以说 play football / play soccer。例如：I like playing football on weekends.
“进攻” 是 attack 或 offense；“防守” 是 defend 或 defense。教练常说 “Attack together, defend together!”（进攻一起上，防守一起回！）。此外，counter-attack 表示“反击”。
“扑救” 用 save。例如：The goalkeeper made a brilliant save.（守门员做出了一次精彩扑救。）“扑出点球” 是 save a penalty。
VAR 是 Video Assistant Referee（视频助理裁判）的缩写。球员和教练常问：“Why is VAR checking? 为什么VAR在检查？” “VAR confirmed the goal. VAR确认进球有效。”
最常用 pass（传球），短传 short pass，长传 long ball / long pass。另外，“直塞” 是 through ball，“横传” 是 cross。例如：He split the defense with a through ball.
Hat-trick （帽子戏法）。例如：He scored a hat-trick in the final.（他在决赛中上演了帽子戏法。）“梅开二度” 可以说 brace （两个进球）。
